Overview of Woodworking Equipment

Hand-held woodworking equipment includes tools like nail guns, circular saws, hand drills, hand-held routers, sanders, jigsaws and staple guns. These tools are great for their mobility. They are often used for the touching up or finishing of wood parts that are too large to be placed on a machine.ste.

A common piece of woodworking equipment that has been around for more than a century is the table saw. Table saws are great for accurately cutting, ripping and scoring of wood parts. It is likely that you will find a table saw in just about every wood shop due to their simplicity and versatility.

Wood saws have come a long way over the years. They first began as handsaws. Although useful, handsaws took a lot of time and effort for a low level of accuracy. Modern woodworking equipment includes band saws, panel saws, radial arm saws, miter saws and more. Each sawing machine is specifically designed to cut efficiently and accurately using different styles of blades. Each blade will remove a different amount of wood while cutting.

Saw blades come in a variety of different tooth thickness called, the ‘kerf of the blade.’ A large kerf will remove more material than a smaller kerf. Larger kerf blades are typically used in ripping or chopping applications. Smaller kerf blades are used where intricate curves or designs need to be created.

Finishing can take several steps depending on the woodworking equipment being used. The first step is to sand the piece with fine-grit sandpaper. Once the wood surface is smooth, a wood finish, such as a polish, sealant or wood protectant can be applied. This can be done using a variety of manual and automatic wood finishing machines. Another option would be to use a wood-laminating machine to apply a laminate film over the woods surface.
